weekend notes

These are our kayaks - the Patriot & the Otter - a few years ago with some friends taking a turn.  Sunday our friend “baptized” the Otter, flipping it for the first time.  Maybe he thought the cold water bath would make the trip more exciting.  :)  It was the choppiest water I’ve ever kayaked on.

We grilled out at the lake and enjoyed some gorgeous fall weather.  Jerry taught our eldest child how to fish - C. absolutely loved it and exhibited admirable patience for a 4 year old.  We’re going to have to put rods on our wish lists, I guess.

Also this weekend our eldest attended his first “birthday party” and we had visitors - “old” college friends with 3 children the same ages as ours.  I was very grateful they took the time to visit us!

feast of booths article

I thought this was an excellent article on the Jewish Feast of Booths.

Of the hundreds of possible areas of study we can choose in this life, Scripture is probably the one I’d put the top of my list of interests…

toys & “made in China” post

(I’ve got help w/ the kiddos today, so I’m posting way more than usual!)

Here’s an opinion post on the topic of toys made in China with several good ideas & helpful links.

Also, here’s a cool site of American-made toys!  Just in time for Christmas lists.

list of 10 “health” foods

Filed under: recipes — happymama at 11:45 am on Thursday, September 20, 2007

It’s hard to know what’s “healthy” these days. I recently read a magazine article about these “10 best foods you aren’t eating” which they claimed to be very healthy. The article included descriptions, benefits & recipes. You probably can’t find half of them at a small-town grocery store, but here’s the list anyway:

  • fresh beets
  • guava (rind, seeds, & all)
  • cabbage
  • pomegranate juice
  • swiss chard
  • cinnamon
  • purslane
  • goji berries
  • dried plums (i.e., prunes - no longer a fashionable term)
  • pumpkin seeds

life quotes

“God’s love does not distinguish between the infant in the mother’s womb or the child or the youth or the adult or the older person.  In each one God sees His image and likeness.  Human life is a manifestation of God and His Glory.”

Pope Benedict XVI

“The value of marriage is not that adults produce children but that children produce adults…”

Peter De Vries

“While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.”

Angela Schwindt

List of blogs by dads

Well now here’s something very interesting, if you ask me. The mind of man (in the sense meaning male!) is so foreign to me - even after several years of marriage - that I’m very pleased to present this list of blogs written by DADS. I haven’t looked into these yet, haven’t screened them, so venture into the minds of these men with caution… And Enjoy!

A while back I told Amy L. that I’d show her a link to a list of blogs - almost exclusively Catholic home schooling moms.  Here it is.  Click on this blog, and scroll down the sidebar on the right until you see “4 Real Learning Bloggers”.  There are about 70 blogs in the list.  Enjoy!

PS My brother made it back home safely!  He’s happy to be back, although they are putting him right back to work tomorrow bright & early!
